Former Mayor Pro Tem, Alphonso Thomas is a lifetime Stockbridge resident, a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a graduate of Fort Valley State University.

 

His service to the community spans over 35 years as both a public servant and public official. Alphonso was elected to the Stockbridge city council in 2011.

 

He served two years as Mayor ProTem where he was appointed by his peers, he was also appointed by the Mayor to serve as Chairperson of the Community Relations Committee and represented the city council on the Main Street Advisory Board.

 

In 2015, after completing 120 training  hours from the Georgia Municipal Association and the Robert E. Knox, Jr. Leadership Institute, Alphonso was awarded the Prestigious Certificate of Excellence. In addition to his city appointments, Alphonso serves as President of the Stockbridge Civic Association, a local non-profit organization that has served the community for many years.

 

The Henry County Branch of the NAACP honored Alphonso with The Freedom Fund Community Service Award in 2012 and 2015 for his dedicated commitment to the city of Stockbridge.

 

For six consecutive years, Thomas has honored members of the community with the Annual African-American Celebration during Black History Month, and has been the driving force behind the Carrie Mae Hambrick Annual Legacy Celebration.

Alphonso Thomas paid tribute and honored all Henry County First Responders including Police, Fire, EMT, EMA, and Sheriff agencies.

 

As an Eagle Scout Project facilitator with the Boy Scouts of America, Alphonso was honored and awarded the Mentor's Pin from Troop #65. Additionally, as part of his continued dedication to the youth of the city, he recognized four of the county's top students with Letters of Commendation for receiving the prestigious Gates Millennial Scholarship and honored 12 "Young and Gifted" students from the Henry County School system.

In 2015, the Zeta Mu Nu Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. named Alphonso Thomas, Mayor Pro-Tem of Stockbridge, as the Omega Citizen of the Year for his Outstanding achievements. Alphonso's accolades included researching and documenting Stockbridge as the ancestral home of "Daddy King" Martin Luther Sr., and sponsoring the Resolution for the MLK, Sr. Heritage Trail and the King Family Plaque on display in the Stockbridge City Hall.

Alphonso Thomas brings Proven leadership to the city council and a background of community partnerships delivering results. His knowledge of local government will effectively serve the City of Stockbridge forging a new path forward for economic growth and development.
